The History of Kebab (Gyro)
According to a legend Turkish kebab was first served in 1299 by Ottoman
sultans to their guests. However it was not until 1453 that döner
kebab became the national dish of Turkey as Constantinopolis
(renamed in 1930 Istanbul) was conquered by sultan Mehmet II who
rewarded his brave soldiers with a festive meal - kebab served with
rice. Since then kebab has stayed virtually the same and it has
become a tremendously popular dish all round the world.
Kebab reached Europe in 1900s and one can say that it made its
breakthrough after the second world war. The history of kebab in
Finland is only about two decades long, but it has quickly gained
popularity in Finland as wholesome and tasty food.
Genuine Finnish Kebab
In 1985 a comprehensive school teacher Voitto ”Woti” Ahlroth
realised his big dream and founded Woti Kebab. As a dedicated gourmet
he had spent years collecting recipies in order to create a delicious
kebab that would suit the Finnish taste. This resulted in a unique
selection of salad dressings that are the basis of our products along
with the fresh meat, vegetables and bread that are all produced locally.
Woti’s – a genuine Finnish Kebab was born out of love for food
and after years of development.
